To sell or not to sell: a collector's quandary...
I have a couple of all-matching, original K98k's and am thinking of selling one, the 1937. The other is a 1944. Both vet bringbacks.
I don't shoot these two, just collect. I don't have a C & R license any more so replacing it if I sold it would be difficult, and expensive. It's really, really nice and I think I might miss it if I sold. OTOH, if we're getting close and I mean CLOSE to TEOTWAWKI, I would do better to have fewer C & R's, and more semi's and ammunition. Or PMs. Or stored food. Or whatever. I have some semi's already and ammo, too, and other preps. The money that selling the K98 would fetch would be helpful but I am not desperate at all. Selling it seems pragmatic, but I don't want to be sorry, later, either. What to do? :dontknow: |
Re: To sell or not to sell: a collector's quandary...
That's a tough call.
In '89 I sold all my 'romantic' guns directly after the import ban. That is, I sold any guns which I had that weren't outright serious modern fighting arms and acquired more serious fighting arms. Included in that decision were some very fine S&W 25-2 revolvers (1955 Match models and a couple of the Jovino custom 2.5" Effector models with the round butt, both had the smoothest, most dangerous double action trigger pull I've ever experienced) and a very nice Browning repro of the 1886 Winchester in .45-70. I later regretted selling all those cool guns. A couple of years ago I sold my last G series FAL for $5K and used that money for other preps. Now a couple of Chicom rifles suit my purposes. I still think it's wise to lighten one's load and be most effective with what you have, however in hindsight I suggest you should do what makes you happy. |

If we get to TEOTWAWKI or some kind of total ban you will be able to fetch a lot (more) for a firearm and ammo package. If you keep them and we never get there you'll still have a couple of cool old firearms with some history that anyone would be glad to own. I would definitely hold them for now.

Re: To sell or not to sell: a collector's quandary...
I'll trade you a 50lb sack of pinto beans and a brick of .22LR...
...that's preps AND ammo for your old relic!:biggrin::biggrin: Deal....huh....huh...Deal????? |
Re: To sell or not to sell: a collector's quandary...
You need to keep that K98. I would also recommend stocking up ammo for them both because one day you might have to press them "back into service". They are fine battle rifles and I think you would regret selling it big-time.
Good guns, good tools, preps, etc...are the last things you want to part with in my opinion. Sell every other thing not nailed to the floor before that kind of stuff. |
Re: To sell or not to sell: a collector's quandary...
Personally I would be stocking some ammo for them.
However if you decide to sell one drop me a PM.:s1: |
Re: To sell or not to sell: a collector's quandary...
Don't sell either of the K98's. I don't miss some of what I had, but I regret selling some of the others. My stroll down memory lane is too painful to recall at the moment.....
Take care, Mod1 |
Re: To sell or not to sell: a collector's quandary...
Now is not the time to be selling any firearm. Trading for another gun, yes, if you're getting a fair trade, but exchanging good rifles for FRNs, no way.

Re: To sell or not to sell: a collector's quandary...
Have you ever fired them? Are they even usable? Except for the M-Ns they're about the most indestructible arms out there. If as you say you are not hurting for money, then I would say hold on to them, unless they're wall hangers. Get ammo for them; I assume they're 8mm Mauser, right? That's about the only surplus I ever see anymore.

Re: To sell or not to sell: a collector's quandary...
The market is a little softer now than a few years ago for vintage K98's, Gew98's and P-08/P-38's....
If you don't need the cash, I'd probably wait till the "stimulus" kicks in good and sell then... I sold my collection of WW2 German edged weapons right as this thing started. I turned it into PM's, debt payoff and some preps. If I had to sell those same blades now, I'd take a 30% haircut from what they brought 16 months ago. |
Re: To sell or not to sell: a collector's quandary...
They are both becoming fairly worthless. You should sell them to me right now before it gets to the point you'll have to pay me to take them away.

Thank you!
Forgive me for resurrecting a dead thread, but I neglected to say thank you to all who took time to reply. I am still conflicted but have pretty much remained in "hold mode" since reading your views on this subject, and not sold.
I still wonder if I should cut the WWII stuff loose and buy more modern types (AK, SKS, etc.), but then again they all work well even after all these years and I do have the ammo for them, so... |
